Finding ourselves “down South” again (for my Western friends I don’t mean Anaheim or San Diego :-) We were greeted by the lightening, wind, and rain that I remember in Arkansas and Mississippi. It is night, but not yet cold. The days will be grey.
Got up at 3 a.m. with the kids after my worst night of sleep since college. Though now the sleep is a lot more precious. I was too nervous about sleeping through the alarm and missing our cab. But walking through airports, eating protein, and generally adjusting a downhill attitude does wonders for warding off a headache. Our childen have gotten old enough now that big trips are… dare I say, fun?
There is so much validation in the first two paragraphs of this article, I'd like to cry.
"Forget Sudoku, crossword puzzles and computer games. If you really want to train your brain, then eat dark chocolate, have plenty of sex and follow the Scandinavian example of having cold meat for breakfast.
The growing numbers of people who are trying to strengthen their mental ability through 'brain training' should also avoid cannabis, watching soap operas, hanging out with serial complainers or pursuing fat-free diets, according to a new book on getting 'brain-fit'."
How long have I been denouncing fat free diets or eaten cold fried chicken for breakfast; I can't watch a soap opera because my eyes are rolled too far back in my head; after getting used to dark chocolate, Hershey's is intolerable...... You get the idea.
Thank you Brad :-)
I usually stop myself from negative blogging. A lot of things aren't worth remembering. But today, our little family finally got our (very simplified) Thanksgiving meal!
After coming down with a cold on Monday of Thanksgiving week, I had to cancel on the 7 people we were expecting to eat with us on Thursday, cooking and cleaning with 3 children under-foot just wasn't a good idea. I spent Wednesday in bed. But Thursday I felt well enough to go out to eat. Since our first 5 choices were closed for the holiday, we went to a chain restaurant in Alameda county called Baker's Square. I had the Reuben.
Now I hadn't had a Reuben in 5 years, and that was in Connecticut. It was a very good Reuben. You New Englanders know what I mean. This sandwich last week just tasted like......... salt. Since I do have a salty tooth, on the opposite side from my sweet tooth, I considered it edible......questionably. Baker's Square is known for it's pie selection, but in my opinion it's just the selection that's attractive, the pie quality itself is ok. They're not fabulous. Perhaps a large selection compromises the quality. Or I'm just not a pie person? I'd much rather choose those calories from pastries or chocolate with nuts. And for what we paid we could've had Macaroni Grill ambiance instead of IHOP ambiance :(
Today between walking Seth to school and walking to pick him up, I managed the chicken and dressing, the kind you fully bake as a raw egg and bread batter, green onions and sage, and a pumpkin pie :-) Brad was delighted to see me so busy. The house smells great. Considering I'd had most of my day's calories by 3:30, I'm looking forward to popcorn and Battlestar Galactica: Razor with Brad. Yay, it's a date.
If you could get everyone in the world to change their behavior in one way, what would you have them do differently?

If everyone in the world decided not to take little words and deeds so personally and guarded themselves against being so easily offended, most of the world's problems could be solved pretty quickly.

If you had the ability to teleport, where would you go right now?
the talon, the daily planet, the kent farm, and of course the fortress of solitude
Since we're teleporting, we may as well travel to a parallel universe.

Have you ever won anything at a carnival, arcade or midway game?
When I was six, my family went to our school's fall carnival. This was the only one we ever had. I won three cakes at the cake walk. After the third, my mother pulled me off the line. (Oddly, musical chairs has always made me really nervous. Even though it's similar to the cake walk, I might not get a chair!)
Since then, I've been routinely winning things, not all the time, and I don't gamble, but party raffles, drawings at work... I've resolved to win the weekly raffle at Trader Joe's, and I've been trying for a year :( But I still think like a winner! Bring your own bags and enter each week to win $25 worth of groceries. I go twice a week. I would think those would be decent odds.
Show us your favorite way to stay warm on a cold autumn day.

I'm crocheting my third "baby" blanket (afghan size) for the third baby, who is now three. The Homespun Lion Brand yarn has been great to work with. It is not the cheapest yarn on the shelf at $5 a skein, but it's one of the softest and offers all your favorite colors, very earthy selection. Picking out the color is my favorite part :)
So every winter since '99, (I'm slow) I've stayed plenty warm while I'm working on these blankets. In fact, I can't work on them during the summer 'cause it's like an inferno.
