Savannah came home yesterday saying she'll never eat another Twinkie, not that I was concerned about it since I haven't brought those home in years. Her teacher told her that they have animal lard and beef fat in them. I didn't look it up because I figure she's probably right.
Completely unrelated....
Today Savannah came into the kitchen before breakfast and said that she didn't catch a leprechaun. (This is her third year and third attempt.) This year, she set the trap in her closet. I'm a closet closer because I believe it saves energy with central heat. She insisted that the door stay open for the leprechaun. Savannah was hoping he would stay in the closet for awhile, kind of like a pet :) Of course, she's 8 years old. I know that she knows better, but I play along.
When she said the gold was still in her closet floor, I said, "Maybe he replaced it with fool's gold."
Savannah, "What's fool's gold?"
Me, "It looks real, but it's not."
Savannah, "That's what I used. It was a chocolate coin."
Me, "Maybe he knew it wasn't real." I could see her thinking about this. I said, "Maybe they don't like chocolate."
So do leprechaun's like chocolate? jelly beans, gummi bears, or just gold? Whichever, next year may be too late. She may have outgrown this kind of fun.
Also, I hadn't had a twinkie in years, until last August. Brad and I shared a two-pack while we were visiting Mississippi. It seemed like a suitable place to eat a twinkie again. No offense to any Mississippians, but....
There is so much validation in the first two paragraphs of this article, I'd like to cry.
"Forget Sudoku, crossword puzzles and computer games. If you really want to train your brain, then eat dark chocolate, have plenty of sex and follow the Scandinavian example of having cold meat for breakfast.
The growing numbers of people who are trying to strengthen their mental ability through 'brain training' should also avoid cannabis, watching soap operas, hanging out with serial complainers or pursuing fat-free diets, according to a new book on getting 'brain-fit'."
How long have I been denouncing fat free diets or eaten cold fried chicken for breakfast; I can't watch a soap opera because my eyes are rolled too far back in my head; after getting used to dark chocolate, Hershey's is intolerable...... You get the idea.
Thank you Brad :-)
When I checked out on my next grocery trip, I handed my TJ's crew member another bar and explained that I owed him for this, but that I wouldn't be buying this one. How honest of you, he says and rewards me with it, making it my 3rd one, but he didn't ring it. Somehow, I can't do math in front of strangers, (don't ask me why) so I didn't argue. It was certainly not a scam, but I realized upon leaving that I'd gotten 3 for the price of one!
It's happened before at TJ's. A different crew member let me take a yogurt because I was trying to pay for a yogurt that my 3 year old smuggled out. She rang it, but gave it to me anyway. It probably just makes us even for the watermelon that I left under the cart and never went back for.
My point, I love how laid back and generous they are at our Trader Joe's.
I expected my girlfriend would buy me a birthday coffee; she certainly didn't have to. Instead she showed up at the kiddies' bookstore playdate with a Starbucks gift card and two bars of dark chocolate, which her two children had selected. Well, I've enjoyed them with wild abandon! The gift card is gone. I'm working on the second chocolate bar as I type, and my pants don't fit. Hmmm.
Savannah recycled some little happies she'd made, happy to give them to me for my birthday. It was uneventful this year. But every few years it is a bigger event with a family party. We did have curry which I love, but since I don't have it often, that first bite always gets an eye-roll. I bought myself some birthday shoes. My practical mother always sends a check, and I used that for some purpely-brown quartz earrings. And the e-card from my VOX neighbor gamany was an extra nice surprise! Thank you gamany!
I'd intended for my soup night to coincide with the Chinese New Year as well as my birthday and maybe a game of Taboo, but my soup night steam has really run low. I haven't completely given up on it, just being my moody self.
The sweet potato spears I roasted this evening are perfect. The cauliflower is taking a little longer, although surely worth it. (Both in the toaster oven.) And by cooking the kiddies' meatballs in the same olivey oiled pan as the vegetables, they lap them up :) The seasonal food of the week at whfoods is oranges. We ate so many clementines a month ago, I know the kids won't have anything to do with any citrus. Savannah's into apples right now. I've always liked the Fuji.
