Seth's Cheeto hand and love in the universe

Seth asked if he could help me. Hmmmm, a chance to put him to work. I suggested he get a wet wipe and clean all the door knobs, because they get food on them sometimes. (Y'all remember I have three little ones.) This apparently made him think he needed to clean the remote, offering to run it under water. When I told him no, we'll have to throw it out if you do that, son, he explained he'd gotten cheetos on it because he'd used his "cheeto hand" watching his They Might Be Giants podcasts. So I've cleaned the Cheeto schmear off of the Mac mini remote. I've done something with my day! :-( I think he should clean the door knobs as punishment.

A few minutes later, Seth said, "Grapes please!" because I sat down, forgetting to get their grapes. I sighed when I got up, mostly from the demand in his voice. And he knew it. He knows my sighs. He ran into the kitchen after me, and before I could finish saying, "Go sit back down." so he wouldn't be underfoot, he hugged me and said, "I love you more than grapes. I love you to the universe and back."

Seth teased me by pretending to eat a big slice of apple, as opposed to the small bite that he knows I prefer. I ignored it.

"Seth, they say that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. What do you think that means?"

My interesting tone took his attention away from The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, and he said, "Doctors don't like apples?"

Sound asleep in Mississippi

and with the light on!

On our trip last month, it was always interesting getting the little ones to sleep. I'd tuck them in only to find them later either laughing or fighting really loudly. But once they were down, even the light didn't bother them.

The kiddies always have a lot of fun in the house where Brad grew up. It is big and full of strange imports from all over the world, little musical instruments you wouldn't recognize, more books than I've ever seen in anyone's house, his brother's large paintings, including a life size angel of death and angel of life. Brad found his Childcraft books and his mother had no problem with our taking them home with us. I'd been looking on ebay for a set because I poured over mine when I was young but don't know what became of them.

Curry, lots of homemade sourdough rolls and loaves, an Italian Creme Cake, and Savannah helped her grandmother make chapati.

The Number 10

Seth's big field trip was a bus ride to the museum. An odd choice I think for rowdy 5 year old children, mostly boys. Running my errands, I drove past his class all crowded around the bus stop. I'd assumed they'd rent a yellow bus, and sure enough, when Seth got home, the only thing he had to say about it was his disappointment in not getting to ride a yellow school bus. He'd ridden the public transit bus, The Number 10. So now we see The Number 10 bus all over town, and Seth yells from the back seat, his little barbaric challenges, like, "I hate you, Number 10!" or "Oh, no! Not again!" or "I'll get you for this Number 10!"

With temperatures in the 80s in the East Bay, you'd never think that winter is coming. We're getting in as many bike/wagon/pogo stick/scooter rides as we can before the rain comes.

No Music Monday

My first No Music Monday. Today in the van, I resisted the habit of reaching for the music so that I could instead hear the pitch of my 3-year-old's cough, and these abstract phrases from my 5 year old, that I can never remember later in the day. I just know he doesn't use them right, like "what's the meaning of this?!" when I ask if he's strapped into his car seat, or some such.

The best part was the silence that I heard. Something about the music playing in the car, makes them loud, obnoxious, maybe even quarrelsome.... as if they're competing with the music for my attention? They throw spit and use poopy, potty talk and laugh louder if I scold them. But not today, with the music off they got reflective, peaceful. It was very nice.

We did our best to save him.

Don't tell the kids, but we had to put him down (in the trash can.) I think Seth flipped and twirled him until the legs ripped off. (Poor Seth, he really gets blamed a lot for this kind of thing. But there's probably good reason.)

One of Brad's co-workers has very nicely given the kids a couple of toys. The juicy bug ball got a lot of use. Seth loved it. Thank you, Byrne. It was disgusting, but it was played with a lot, until it met its own demise and imploded.
