He's and She's

Yesterday I rolled Arwen's window down so she could say goodbye to a little friend, and her purple balloon got sucked out the window! If you've ever witnessed this, it is a true heartbreak for a child. Their tears are genuine.

Trying to put a good spin on her tragedy I said, "But he's free now! He got his freedom!"

I expected more tears, but she said, "You mean she."

Literal minds

Seth teased me by pretending to eat a big slice of apple, as opposed to the small bite that he knows I prefer. I ignored it.

"Seth, they say that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. What do you think that means?"

My interesting tone took his attention away from The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, and he said, "Doctors don't like apples?"

Backseat conversations

Seth to Arwen, "When I'm taller, I'm gonna be a workin' man."

Arwen, "No, when you a Daddy."

Seth, after thinking and quietly mumbling, "No, I'm gonna be a working man."

To clarify, he's been walking around the house for a couple of weeks carrying his backpack so stuffed it ripped a hole down the side and his "briefcase" of plastic tools, saying he's on his way to do man work. (I think this is extra cute because Brad carries a backpack to work with his laptop in it.) Seth will make stops in different rooms, usually to "fix" a closet door.

About two months ago, I banned all toys and books from the van because they would fight, squabble, and scream over their plastic *#@!% (insert Yosemite Sam cuss words here). Drives the driver mad! We've made attempts to ease back into the toy sharing in the van, but it never works. I let them have a Costco receipt one day and they even fought over a piece of paper :/ They even began to argue about what they saw out their windows, getting competitive about who had the better view. Arwen would yell at Seth on our morning ride to the BART, "No, don't look out my window!"

Now, Seth and Arwen look out their respective windows, comparing what they see moving past them, "Yay, I have a playground out my window!" or "Arwen, you got a puppy out your window. Hey, so do I!" They actually root for each other now and give hoorahs for each other's view.

This is a rare post. I typically post their milestones, accomplishments, and signs of individuality because those are the things I want to remember, instead of the fighting. But if I hadn't taken away the toys, would they be so creative and kind about what they see out their windows?

A conversation with Seth very late at night.

We stopped at a convenience store coming home from vacation last night. Seth and I walked across the parking lot to use the restrooms. Seth is heavily sniffing his nose.

Me - "We need to blow your nose."

Seth - "No."

I insisted. That's what you do when you have a runny nose. You keep it clean.

Seth - He still didn't want to blow his nose. "But I'm smelling it back up."

After thinking, that's a funny thing to say. I should blog that, I promptly forgot to blow his nose in the restroom. He's still sniffing to this day. As am I.

My new collection

I have decided to collect cliches. Not the American English cliches that I've grown up with, like,"so sue me" or "whatever floats your boat." Some of them have their place and say the very thing I want, but I want to collect the old phrases, the foreign ones that I haven't heard before.


I've had a longtime aversion to collecting anything. I feel burdened with a lot of possessions or clutter to keep dusted. I love the wooden giraffe that Brad brought to the union. This giraffe's ear has been glued back on twice. He stands up high enough now, nobody can tell. But another giraffe wouldn't be special and would take something away from the first.

I've subscribed to A Phrase a Week at www.phrases.org.uk. My favorite so far is "daylight robbery." Sounds like "highway robbery," but according to some, daylight robbery refers to an English king who levied a window tax. The rich and proud went so far as to deliberately build structures with many windows, to show their financial status. But since it taxed "the very stuff of life, i.e. light and air," a lot of people boarded up their windows, adding "painted-on trompe l'oeil windows." So when the theater over the highway from Pleasanton charges $3.50 for a bottle of water, that's daylight robbery!

So send your favorite or least favorite cliches my way, any nationality or culture. If you can, send the original language with English translation, and of course, the meaning.

Storage in the digital world is large and easy to unclutter. So it's the perfect chachky for a word nerd to collect.
